MEASURABLE RESULTS
In 2008, the leadership of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 265 and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority implemented new Joint Workforce Investment (JWI) partnership training programs. JWI focused on utilizing the expertise of its workforce and engaging veteran, front line workers to improve both maintenance and transportation operations.
JWI created two new training programs (now apprenticeships) to provide both entry level and incumbent employees with the opportunity to advance their professional careers in transit. These worker-run programs utilize veteran operators and mechanics as mentors, both on the job and in the classroom. Apprentices learn the professional skills they need to become successful in their jobs and improve the public face of the agency.
The effectiveness of the coach operator mentor program has stood the test of time, as demonstrated in the metrics above. Both technical skills and interpersonal skills (with customers and coworkers) are needed to help new employees become Professional Coach Operators.
